she stares...and the man
in red and white winks. she hides
behind her mother.
Tsuburaname mitsumetenigeru hahanosena
        (translated by Tokoroten)



she lies awake.
         snow drifts down in silent flakes
         ...footsteps on the roof!


the child throws tinsel
carelessly, on the back side
of the Christmas tree


five times too large,
the cat rests purring
in the manger scene


cold Christmas eve:
         someone dressed as Santa Claus
         helps shovel out my car


I gave my father
an ashtray made of paper.
as a child, Christmas day.
